Governor Christie To South Jersey Biz: Looking Good, But….

CHERRY HILL, N.J. (CBS) —  New Jersey Governor Chris Christie addressed the South Jersey Chamber of Commerce in Cherry Hill on Wednesday, touting the achievements of his administration while issuing warnings on a number of fronts.

Christie reminded the luncheon crowd of several hundred that his administration has cut taxes and reduced unemployment, among other things. But his term ends in 19 months and the governor says Democrats can’t wait for a chance to take over.

Which is why he’s taking a hard-line on issues like the future of Atlantic City. The governor reminded the crowd that the town will run out of money in mid-May. Others have put that estimate well into June or even July.

But whenever that happens, Christie said, “they are out of money until September. All the back and forth in Trenton won’t change that. And I am not permitting them to pick the pocket of taxpayers i the other 20 counties in this state and, by the way, in their own county again.”

Christie reiterated his position that he will only approve any bailout for Atlantic City that’s tied to a takeover bill that has already passed the State Senate and is languishing in the assembly.

And he warned those in attendance that they will be called upon to help him on challenges coming up later in the year. Christie wants to defeat a pair of ballot questions in November being pushed by Democrats that would alter the state Constitution. One would mandate state pensions be fully funded while another would increase the state’s minimum wage to 15 dollars an hour.

Both measures, the governor says, will harm the state’s economic recovery. “You and I together have brought this state back to economic prosperity,” he said.

“But if we take our eye off the ball for one second,” Christie said “they are going to fleece us again.”

Christie addressed the crowd for over an hour, but avoided reporters by taking a side exit from the room.
